RustWeek Interview: Michal Kostrubiec (aka FractakFir), Compiler Engineer

Rust Programming Language

In this interview, Tyler Mandry sits down with Michał Kostrubiec (FractalFir) to chat about: getting drawn into the Rust Project by way of a bikeshed, building weird rustc backends, and running Rust code on GPUs. Michał works at VectorWare and is a maintainer of Rust CUDA. Michał has been working on bringing Rust, a language designed for CPUs, to the strange and whimsical world of GPUs. He talks about the challenges of getting the Rust standard library running on a device with no OS and no filesystem, where the stack is thread-local and can't be shared. Along the way, they discuss what host-calls are, how GPUs trade latency for throughput, and the ambition to, one day, run rustc on a GPU.
