Kommodity: Open source cloud infrastructure

The cloud promised speed and ease, leading to massive adoption of hyperscalers. However, this has resulted in painful vendor lock-in, exploding cloud bills, and technical limitations, especially for healthcare and other heavily regulated industries dealing with PII data and data sovereignty concerns. Even acquiring expensive, specialized AI-ready hardware (GPUs) is difficult for smaller companies, who often wait behind hyperscalers in the queue.12 Kommodity is an open-source project designed to solve this technical debt by abstracting the underlying infrastructure. It replaces thousands of lines of infrastructure-specific code (like Terraform) with a single binary that allows rapid deployment of secure Kubernetes clusters to any cloud—hyperscaler, neocloud, or on-premise—by changing just one value. This commoditization of infrastructure provides flexibility, cuts costs, and helps organizations meet strict regulatory requirements without complex and costly confidential compute.
