I Turned My Wi-Fi Into a Surveillance System
We tested RuView, the viral open-source project that claims it can detect people and their movements using nothing but WiFi signals. After digging into its claims, we flashed RuView’s firmware onto three $10 ESP32-S3 boards, trained a small model using a webcam as the teacher, and got it to recognize eight different movements about 80% of the time in a live test. We also talk about what this means for your privacy, since WiFi signals go through walls and a new WiFi standard built specifically for sensing was published last year. 🔗 Relevant Links WiFi Sensing Kit: https://github.com/andrisgauracs/wifi-sensing-kit RuView: https://github.com/ruvnet/ruview ❤️ More about us Radically better observability stack: https://betterstack.com/ Written tutorials: https://betterstack.com/community/ Example projects: https://github.com/BetterStackHQ 📱 Socials Twitter: https://twitter.com/betterstackhq Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/betterstackhq/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@betterstack LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/betterstack 📌 Chapters: 0:00 WiFi that knows what I'm doing 1:13 How WiFi sensing works 2:12 The camera as a teacher 2:59 RuView's claims and the catch 4:01 My three-board ESP32 setup 5:02 Training the model with my webcam 6:17 Test results 7:04 WiFi only, camera covered 7:33 The privacy problem 8:28 Where this could actually be useful 8:48 Limitations and final thoughts
