SQL Server Performance Office Hours Episode 86 - Drinking Champagne in an Algarve Bathtub
In this video, I, Erik Darling from Darling Data, dive into a series of office hours questions, addressing topics ranging from Azure managed instances to performance counter misconceptions and the nuances of SQL Server partitioning. I share my candid thoughts on managed instances, emphasizing the importance of direct, measurable performance metrics over misleading counters. Additionally, I explore the utility of partitioning, particularly when paired with clustered columnstore indexes, and discuss the reliability of query store wait stats for troubleshooting. The conversation also delves into the complexities of merge joins, explaining why SQL Server might favor them despite their apparent inefficiency. Enjoy the champagne-soaked bathtub setting as I tackle these questions, hoping to provide valuable insights for anyone navigating the intricacies of SQL Server performance.
