System Design Interview Deep Dive

System design interviews test whether you can reason about performance trade-offs. This is the five I keep coming back to: architecture shape, communication patterns, hosting model, caching strategy, and content delivery. All demonstrated on an e-commerce flow. Microservices let you scale the payment service independently during a flash sale, but every call between services adds network latency the monolith didn't have. Sync communication blocks the user while payment confirms, async lets invoice generation happen in the background after. Provisioned servers give consistent latency, serverless eliminates operational overhead but introduces cold starts. Caching stores frequently requested data in a fast layer so the database isn't hit a thousand times for the same product page. CDN distributes content to edge locations so distance stops being a latency factor. Each strategy is a trade-off, and the best architecture layers several of them together. Sequel to the System Design for Beginners video (linked below) where I built a URL shortener using a 7-step framework. This one goes deeper on the performance side.
