How to Set Up Multiple AI Characters in One Unity Session - Part 1 | Convai Multi-Character Tutorial
Learn how to set up multiple AI characters in the same Unity session using Convai’s Multi-Character Sessions and let players naturally choose who they want to speak with inside a shared 3D environment. Most games, training simulations, virtual worlds, and immersive experiences contain more than one character. Once multiple conversational AI characters share the same scene, the experience needs a way to determine exactly which character the player is addressing. In this Unity tutorial, we set up three different Convai AI characters in the same scene, assign each character its own Character ID, configure them through the Convai Manager, and test a natural conversation where the player moves between Sophia, Ethan, and Marcus. You will also learn how Convai determines who the player is speaking to using three different character selection methods: Look At: Selects the AI character based on where the player is looking. Proximity: Selects the AI character based on its distance from the player. Manual: Gives you direct control over which character the player interacts with. For this example, we use Look At selection. Once configured, the player can simply look toward a character and start speaking, allowing Convai to determine which AI character should receive the interaction. This makes Multi-Character Sessions useful for games with multiple characters, AI-powered training simulations, role-playing experiences, virtual guides, social environments, XR applications, and other interactive 3D worlds where several AI characters need to exist and communicate within the same scene. This tutorial covers Part 1 of our Multi-Character Sessions setup, where a player can interact with and switch between multiple AI characters in the same Unity scene. In Part 2, we’ll expand this further with all-to-all multi-character awareness, where both players and AI characters can stay aware of conversations and events happening around them. This allows characters to react, respond, or engage naturally when something is relevant to them.
