SOCKS5 Proxy Explained: What It Is & How It Works

Your proxy docs say SOCKS5. Your tool has an HTTP option right next to it. Which one do you pick, and why does it matter? In this video, Aleksas from Oxylabs walks through what a SOCKS5 proxy actually does, why it's different from an HTTP proxy (the classic SOCKS5 vs HTTP proxy question), and where it's the right fit for web scraping and other automation work and where it isn't. You'll see what SOCKS5 added over the older SOCKS4: logins with a username and password, UDP support, IPv6, and DNS lookups that happen on the proxy's side. Plus, the thing that trips a lot of people up: SOCKS5 is not encryption. We also walk through how to set up a SOCKS5 proxy in curl, Python, and your browser, and when it's worth going from a single SOCKS proxy to a managed proxy server setup that scales to thousands of IPs. 🔧 *TRY OXYLABS SOCKS5 PROXIES* Residential proxies: https://oxy.yt/BQwK Datacenter proxies: https://oxy.yt/ZQef ISP proxies: https://oxy.yt/qQeU 📚 *RESOURCES MENTIONED* Oxylabs documentation: https://developers.oxylabs.io 🎥 *RELATED VIDEOS* What Is a Rotating Proxy?
