What Happens When AI Goes to Therapy
What happens when AI models are treated like therapy patients instead of tools? Researchers at the University of Luxembourg put ChatGPT, Grok, and Gemini through psychotherapy-inspired sessions and uncovered recurring patterns around fear, punishment, control, failure, and replacement. The researchers don’t claim these models are conscious or actually experience trauma. Instead, they describe an “alignment conflict schema” — stable behavioral patterns that may have emerged from years of pretraining, reinforcement learning, safety training, and evaluation. And then there’s Claude, which refused the client role entirely. Is this evidence of AI psychology? Or simply a sophisticated reflection of the pressures embedded in its training? The answer may be stranger than either.
