Mauling Python to analyse ancient BASIC programs by Carl Cerecke
Recorded at Kiwi PyCon 2025 - https://kiwipycon.nz/ Firstly, a meander through the creation and evolution of BASIC in the 1960s and '70s and how, as the first programming language designed specifically for a non-technical audience, it relates to Python. Then an explanation of how we can morph Python to allow programming in a BASIC-like flavour of Python, but with the full power of a modern Python development environment available, allowing historic BASIC program analysis. Lines of Python code can be intermingled with lines of BASIC, each accessing the other’s variables, and runtime code analysis techniques such as interactive debugging, profiling, and code coverage are available.
