AWS Certified? Why You’re Still Not a Cloud Architect
AWS certification can help you get interviews, but certification alone does not demonstrate readiness for a cloud architect job. Learn why cloud architect skills must include architecture decisions, business reasoning and communication alongside technical knowledge. In this Short, clipped from a longer Go Cloud Architects video, Mike Gibbs, CEO of Go Cloud Careers, explains why professionals can keep collecting certifications and completing labs without closing the gap between exam preparation and architecture responsibilities. The message is not that AWS certifications are worthless. They provide structure and have value, but they are one part of career preparation. Cloud architects help design cloud strategy, evaluate options and trade-offs, reduce risk, control costs and communicate architectural plans to leadership. Those responsibilities require you to explain why a design was chosen and how it serves the organization. The clip uses cloud networking to illustrate the difference. Knowing about a virtual private cloud, or VPC, is useful. An architect also needs to explain the network architecture and its implications for security, scalability and compliance. Naming an AWS service does not, by itself, explain the business rationale for using it. If you are preparing for a cloud architect interview or a solutions architect interview, practice connecting technical choices to the reasons behind them. Ask yourself whether your preparation helps you justify a recommendation, not simply recall a service name.
