SQL Server Performance Office Hours Episode 78 There's No SSMS In Paris
In this video, I, Erik Darling from Darling Data, tackle some common SQL Server performance questions in a live session from the beautiful city of Paris, France. We dive into scenarios like massive blocking chains during peak loads without deadlocks, exploring why this is often normal and discussing various underlying causes. Then, we delve into situations where CPU might be low but response times are awful, breaking down potential root causes such as blocking, threadpool issues, or even overwhelmed application servers. Lastly, I address the impact of statistics updates on performance, explaining how they can sometimes lead to worse execution plans and increased compile locks in highly concurrent environments. Throughout the session, I emphasize the importance of observability for diagnosing real production issues, advocating for robust monitoring tools like the one I developed specifically to help DBAs do their jobs better.
