PostgresWorld Podcast EP01: Scaling PostgreSQL Without the Operational Overhead
PostgreSQL is easy to get started with. Running it at scale is a different problem. In the inaugural episode of the PostgresWorld Podcast, Deepthi Sigireddi, Head of Databases at Supabase, joins JD to explore what happens as PostgreSQL moves from a developer-friendly database to production infrastructure that has to handle high availability, upgrades, recovery, administration, and eventually horizontal scale. Deepthi shares the thinking behind Multigress, Supabase’s effort to bring those operational pieces together while adding sharding to PostgreSQL. Drawing on her years working with Vitess, she explains why the goal is not to eliminate the people operating databases behind the scenes, but to reduce how much complexity developers have to manage themselves. The conversation also gets into where that promise becomes difficult. JD challenges the idea that a database can simply “just work” at scale, leading to a practical look at what can realistically be automated, what still requires experienced operators, and why solving PostgreSQL scaling will take time.
