Data Governance Vs. Data Management! The DAMA Wheel Explained

Data governance and data management get used interchangeably, but they're two different jobs: one decides who controls the data, the other does the work. Using the definitions from DAMA's DMBOK (the book the CDMP exam is built on), I draw the line between the two in one diagram: the DAMA wheel, with governance at the hub and ten management knowledge areas around the rim. Then a head-to-head on four dimensions (who owns it, what it produces, how you measure it, which tools serve it) and one real change traced through both halves: a date-of-birth column landing in the warehouse, from the classification and access decisions to the Snowflake masking policy or Unity Catalog column mask that enforces them. We look at what breaks when either half is missing, including a $4.82M vs $5.10M revenue dispute that nobody has the authority to settle. It finishes with a verdict on which one a team should put in place first, and the two conditions that flip it. ⏱️ Chapters 0:00 - One word, two jobs: the governance meeting 1:10 - What data management actually is 1:59 - What data governance actually is 3:08 - The DAMA wheel: governance at the hub 4:36 - Head-to-head on four dimensions 6:05 - One real change traced through both 7:48 - When one half is missing 8:54 - Verdict: which one to build first 10:15 - Recap 10:50 - Where the line breaks down 🔗 Links DAMA International (DMBOK): https://www.dama.org CDMP certification: https://cdmp.info Snowflake: https://www.snowflake.com Databricks Unity Catalog: https://www.databricks.com/product/unity-catalog dbt: https://www.getdbt.com GDPR Article 25: https://gdpr-info.eu/art-25-gdpr/ BCBS 239: https://www.bis.org/publ/bcbs239.htm #datagovernance #datamanagement #datagovernancevsdatamanagement #DAMA #DMBOK #CDMP #dataquality #datacatalog #dataowner #datasteward #UnityCatalog #Snowflake #GDPR #dataengineering
