4DOrthosis: Therapist-in-the-Loop Design and Fabrication of Force-Customized Hand Orthoses via 4D Printing Guanyun Wang, Yue Tao, Danlin Qi, Shanghua Lou, Yuyang Zhang, Chuang Chen, Jie Wu, Ye Tao, Lingyun Sun UIST 2026 Video Preview for a UIST 2026 paper Hand orthoses play an important role in rehabilitation by stabilizing joints and facilitating movement, with progressive resistance training being particularly critical for muscle function recovery. Yet existing fabrication workflows rarely support patient-specific fit, force customization, and workflow-compatible monitoring simultaneously. We developed 4DOrthosis through a therapist-in-the-loop process that elicited three design requirements: personalized force, efficient fabrication, and support for monitoring-enabled rehabilitation workflows. 4DOrthosis combines FDM-based 4D printing, a force-structure characterization pipeline, and a parametric design tool that generates orthoses from patient hand dimensions and target force requirements, achieving customized rehabilitative force within an experimentally characterized range of 1–20 N. Studies with five rehabilitation-related evaluators and six users indicate feasibility, workflow compatibility, positioning 4DOrthosis as a practical human-centered fabrication approach for rehabilitation devices.
