I built my family a giant touchscreen
I built my family a giant 40-inch touchscreen called Cannvas. It started life as a replacement for my old smart mirror, but quickly turned into something much more ambitious: a portrait touchscreen with a family whiteboard, calendar, chores and pocket-money tracking, Google Tasks, Home Assistant controls, UniFi stats, family location, weather, news and our family videos. In this video I take you through the full journey, including the hardware I used, the defective IR touch frame, my questionable mounting decisions, liberal applications of hot glue, and how I used Codex and Convex to build the custom software. The indicative total came to A$1,049.84, although that includes a A$109.90 wall mount I bought by mistake and a A$322.52 Raspberry Pi setup I already owned. Excluding those brings the project itself to roughly A$617.42. Would you like a proper start-to-finish build guide? Let me know in the comments. The Cannvas source repository is still private because it currently contains quite a few assumptions about my family, home network and private services. I would need to sanitise and document it properly before releasing something other people could safely use. ## Cannvas and software Cannvas source repository: https://github.com/mikecann/cannvas Convex: https://www.convex.dev/ Using Codex with Convex: https://docs.convex.dev/ai/using-codex OpenAI Codex: https://openai.com/codex/ Home Assistant: https://www.home-assistant.io/ UniFi: https://ui.com/ Google Tasks: https://tasks.google.com/ Google Calendar: https://calendar.google.com/ Leaflet: https://leafletjs.com/ ## My original smart mirror Overview: https://mikecann.blog/posts/mikes-mirror-overview Hardware: https://mikecann.blog/posts/mikes-mirror-hardware Software: https://mikecann.blog/posts/mikes-mirror-software Source code: https://github.com/mikecann/mikes-mirror MagicMirror²: https://magicmirror.builders/ ## Main hardware FFALCON FF40S55 TV: https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/ffalcon-40-inches-full-hd-smart-tv-2025-ff40s55 40-inch IR touch frames: https://www.aliexpress.com/w/wholesale-40-inch-ir-touch-frame.html Raspberry Pi 5 8GB: https://core-electronics.com.au/raspberry-pi-5-model-b-8gb.html Raspberry Pi active cooler: https://core-electronics.com.au/raspberry-pi-5-active-cooler.html LINDEN wall mount: https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/linden-tilt-wall-mount-medium-ltwmm24 Acrylic sheets: https://www.bunnings.com.au/search/products?q=acrylic%20sheet And, of course, the extremely relevant Good Guys head massager: https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/techxtras-head-massager-hwk11300 #DIY #RaspberryPi #Convex #Codex #SmartHome #HomeAssistant
