FerriteCon 2025 Abdulazis Mohamed: Revisiting Adaptive Mesh Refinement that's not P4est

The Julia Programming Language

In this session, Abdulaziz revisits and extends the AMR work presented at last year’s conference, focusing on a refined algorithm where finer elements are superimposed on their parents instead of replacing them. This strategy eliminates the need for explicit continuity constraints such as hanging nodes, simplifying the handling of refined meshes. The algorithm also caches local element contributions to reduce assembly overhead, which is particularly advantageous for local time-stepping schemes in discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods, where the block-diagonal mass matrix allows timesteps to be executed per element without global assembly. This talk is relevant for researchers and developers working on mesh adaptation, efficient finite element implementations, and DG schemes in Julia’s scientific computing ecosystem, and highlights a practical alternative to traditional AMR frameworks within Ferrite.jl workflows.
