OpenWiki: Auto-Generate Docs Your AI Coding Agents Actually Use

OpenWiki is a brand new open source CLI from the LangChain team that reads your entire codebase and writes a structured wiki for it, built specifically for AI coding agents like Claude Code. In this video I go from a repo with a three line README to a full self-maintaining wiki, wire it into CLAUDE.md and AGENTS.md automatically, and set up a GitHub Action that keeps the docs fresh with a daily pull request. By the end you will have OpenWiki installed, a generated wiki for a real TypeScript project, Claude Code answering deep architecture questions using that wiki, and fully automated documentation updates. The tool is 100% FREE and open source (MIT license). You only pay for the model tokens through your own API key (Anthropic, OpenRouter, OpenAI, Fireworks, or Baseten). ───────────────────────────────────── 🔥 WHAT YOU WILL LEARN ───────────────────────────────────── ✅ What OpenWiki is and why "agent documentation" is different from normal docs ✅ How OpenWiki relates to DeepAgents and the LangChain ecosystem ✅ Installing OpenWiki with npm (Node.js 20+ required) ✅ First-time setup: choosing a provider, API key, and model ✅ Where your credentials actually live (~/.openwiki/.env) ✅ Code mode vs personal mode, and why this video focuses on code mode ✅ Running openwiki code --init on a real TypeScript Express project ✅ Reading the generated wiki: quickstart, architecture, source maps ✅ How OpenWiki auto-creates CLAUDE.md and AGENTS.md with clearly marked blocks it can safely update later ✅ Proving the payoff: Claude Code answering architecture questions straight from the wiki ✅ Incremental updates with openwiki code --update and .last-update.json ✅ Daily automated docs PRs with the official GitHub Actions workflow ───────────────────────────────────── ⏱ CHAPTERS ───────────────────────────────────── 00:00 OpenWiki Overview 00:39 What You Will Learn 01:58 Sample Repo Setup 02:37 Install And Modes 05:12 Personal Brain Init 06:58 Code Wiki Init 08:40 Generated Docs Tour 11:33 Using Codex With Wiki 14:17 Local Wiki Updates 17:54 GitHub Actions Automation 21:32 Wrap Up And Benefits ───────────────────────────────────── 🔗 RESOURCES ───────────────────────────────────── ↗ OpenWiki on GitHub → https://github.com/langchain-ai/openwiki ↗ OpenWiki on npm → https://www.npmjs.com/package/openwiki ↗ GitHub Action example → https://github.com/langchain-ai/openwiki/blob/main/examples/openwiki-update.yml ↗ DeepAgents (what OpenWiki is built on) → https://github.com/langchain-ai/deepagents ↗ Claude Code → https://claude.com/claude-code ↗ Github code example: https://github.com/sudarshan-koirala/openwiki-youtube-video-example --------------------------------------------------------------------- ☕ Buy me a Coffee: https://ko-fi.com/datasciencebasics ✌️Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/datasciencebasics ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 🤝 Connect with me: 📺 Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@datasciencebasics?sub_confirmation=1 👔 LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sudarshan-koirala/ 🐦 Twitter: https://twitter.com/mesudarshan 🔉Medium: https://medium.com/@sudarshan-koirala 💼 Consulting: https://topmate.io/sudarshan_koirala #openwiki #langchain #claudecode #aiagents #deepagents #aicoding #datasciencebasics
