Vercel AI SDK Tutorial: Build an AI 3D Product Configurator

In this tutorial, I build a fully working AI 3D product configurator from scratch — the same pattern behind Nike By You, car configurators, and furniture customizers, but driven entirely by natural language. A visitor types a sentence like "sunset-orange running shoe, matte finish, glow sole," and a live 3D model updates in real time with the price and add-to-cart button following automatically. I walk through all seven steps: building a swappable 3D model with React Three Fiber and drei, wiring a price-and-cart layer with React state, connecting the Vercel AI Gateway so the app is model-agnostic, using the Vercel AI SDK's tool calling to make discrete, validated edits to the 3D scene (instead of hallucinated geometry), and building the prompt interface on the Chat SDK. I also cover why the AI route runs on Vercel Fluid Compute instead of standard serverless, and I finish by deploying the whole project live using Claude Code and the Vercel plugin. As a bonus, I show how Vercel Sandbox lets the AI generate and safely run entirely custom configs beyond the four preset tools — the part almost nobody covers.
