The phone or browser is only a window, and quitting the terminal takes the session offline. A cloud session is different: it runs on Anthropic's machines. → What the phone can do: follow the conversation as it happens, see a diff of your changes in a git repo, send messages, attach a photo, switch the model, stop a subagent. A message that starts with ! goes to Claude as text and doesn't run in your shell. → Turning it on: /remote-control (alias /rc) in a running session, claude --remote-control (or --rc) for a new one, or the per-session switch in the desktop app. While it's connected, the terminal shows /rc active (hidden when the terminal is too narrow). → Turning one session off: run /rc again and pick Disconnect this session. Your local session keeps running (real run, Claude Code 2.1.310, Remote Control left off afterwards). → Auto-connect: Enable Remote Control for all sessions in /config, and Connect new sessions to Remote Control on the Claude Code page of the desktop app's Settings. If that desktop switch already shows off, Anthropic's docs say turn it on and then off so Desktop saves your choice. → Blocking it on the whole computer: set "disableRemoteControl": true in ~/.claude/settings.json. In my test, /remote-control became an unknown command and claude remote-control refused to start. → What gets stored: while it's connected, your messages, Claude's responses and the tool activity are stored on Anthropic servers. → A repo's settings file can turn auto-connect off but never on (changelog 2.1.222). → A user report on GitHub (issue 88094, August 20, 2026) says every session started with Remote Control on after an update. Anthropic hasn't confirmed it, so watch for /rc active. → Requirements: a Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise plan; API keys aren't supported. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner has to enable Remote Control first.
