Frontend System Design Essentials: Data-Heavy Frontend Apps
Frontend System Design Essentials — Course: https://icodeit.thinkific.com/courses/frontend-system-design-essentials Frontend System Design Essentials — Book: https://leanpub.com/frontend-system-design-essentials/ Have you ever worked on a frontend feature where the data is already loaded, but the UI still feels extremely slow? The user types into a search box or changes a filter. There is no API request. But the page still freezes — the input feels delayed, and the spinner stops spinning. Sometimes the bottleneck is not the network. It is the work the browser does after the data has already arrived. In this video I use a log analyzer demo — 50,000 log lines (~10 MB) loaded once, then searched, filtered, aggregated, and paginated entirely on the frontend. We run the same analysis on the main thread (UI freezes) and in a Web Worker (UI stays responsive). 00:00 Data loaded — but the UI still freezes 01:27 The problem — main thread blocking 03:06 The solution — Web Workers 04:21 Basic Web Worker API 05:50 Live demo — log analyzer overview 07:38 Main thread mode — debounce is not enough 09:17 Web Worker mode comparison 10:51 Code structure — data flow and requestId 14:14 When should you use Web Workers? 14:58 Summary You'll learn: Why data-heavy UIs can feel slow even when no network request is happening What the main thread is responsible for — and why long synchronous JavaScript blocks rendering and input Why the table showing 50 rows is not where the real cost is — the full dataset scan happens first How Web Workers move CPU-heavy work to a separate thread via postMessage Why debounce reduces how often analysis runs — but does not make it non-blocking The worker data flow: send large input once, send small query messages, return only what the UI needs How requestId prevents stale worker results from overwriting newer queries When to reach for workers vs fixing network, rendering, or memoization first 📘 MY BOOKS & COURSES 👉 Frontend System Design Essentials (Course): https://icodeit.thinkific.com/courses/frontend-system-design-essentials 👉 Frontend System Design Essentials (Book): https://leanpub.com/frontend-system-design-essentials/ 👉 React Anti-Patterns (Amazon): https://www.amazon.com/dp/1805123971 👉 More Tutorials on Advanced Patterns: https://icodeit.com.au/tutorials/advanced-network-patterns-react 📩 STAY CONNECTED 🧠 Newsletter (system design & clean code): https://juntao.substack.com 🌐 Website & Blog: https://icodeit.com.au 🐦 Twitter / X: http://twitter.com/JuntaoQiu 📺 YouTube (subscribe): https://www.youtube.com/@icodeit.juntao #frontend #systemdesign #webworkers #reactjs #webdevelopment #frontendarchitecture #performance #seniordeveloper
