I Turned a Broken RC Car into a Robotics Platform

I Code It

This started as a broken, abandoned RC car. No battery. No controller. For almost two years it sat in a corner because I had no idea how to fix it. Then a few small experiments changed everything: I replaced the original board with an ESP32, controlled motor speed with PWM, exposed the car through a WebSocket interface, drove it with a Nintendo controller — and reused the same system on other cars. This is not a normal hardware tutorial. It is a behind-the-scenes engineering story about a software engineer opening a hardware black box, understanding the old logic hidden in the wires, and slowly turning a dead toy into a small robotics platform. 00:00 From broken RC car to robotics platform 00:56 The abandoned red car 02:05 Opening the black box 03:16 Four wires — drive and steering 04:04 Building a new brain (ESP32 + motor driver) 05:20 First hello world — hardcoded movement 06:00 PWM — from on/off to throttle 07:25 Turning the car into an API 07:56 WebSockets — drive from a browser 09:06 Nintendo controller — swap the input layer 10:06 Servo steering and the testing tool 11:43 Scaling into a platform 13:02 Conclusion 📘 MY BOOKS & COURSES 👉 Frontend System Design Essentials (Course): https://icodeit.thinkific.com/courses... 👉 Frontend System Design Essentials (Book): https://leanpub.com/frontend-system-d... 👉 React Anti-Patterns (Amazon): https://www.amazon.com/dp/1805123971 👉 More Tutorials on Advanced Patterns: https://icodeit.com.au/tutorials/adva... 📩 STAY CONNECTED 🧠 Newsletter (system design & clean code): https://juntao.substack.com 🌐 Website & Blog: https://icodeit.com.au 🐦 Twitter / X: / juntaoqiu 📺 YouTube (subscribe): / @icodeit.juntao --- JetBrains has provided a 20% discount for viewers of this channel.
