End-to-End Encryption

(E2EE) is a communication security model in which data is encrypted at the sending endpoint and decrypted only at authorized receiving endpoints, preventing intermediaries—including service providers such as , , or —from accessing the , provided endpoints and cryptographic keys remain secure. In and , it can support when sensitive datasets traverse or infrastructure, although any server authorized to decrypt the data is an endpoint rather than an intermediary. E2EE often uses , involving a and a , for key establishment or authentication, alongside for message content; asymmetric cryptography is not a defining requirement. Protection against depends on proper endpoint authentication and key verification, not encryption alone. Its core guarantee is confidentiality; and message authenticity require additional mechanisms, commonly and appropriate protocol design. E2EE can constrain services that require server-side access to plaintext. permits computation on encrypted data, whereas protect computation within isolated environments where data may be decrypted. These are separate approaches to protecting sensitive computation, with distinct trust assumptions, rather than necessary consequences of E2EE or automatic extensions of its guarantees.
