OpenAI is an American Artificial Intelligence research organization and technology company founded in 2015 as a nonprofit. As of September 2026, it comprises the nonprofit OpenAI Foundation and the Foundation-controlled OpenAI Group PBC, a for-profit public benefit corporation established through the October 2025 recapitalization that replaced its capped-profit structure. Microsoft remains a major investor and held approximately 27% of the group on an as-converted, diluted basis following that recapitalization. OpenAI’s stated mission is to ensure that Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) benefits all of humanity, whether achieved through its own development efforts or by supporting others. It gained global prominence through large-scale Generative AI models, notably the Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT) series underlying ChatGPT. Beyond Natural Language Processing, it has developed DALL·E for Image Generation, Sora for Video Generation, and Whisper for Automatic Speech Recognition; according to the company, the Sora product was no longer available as of April 26, 2026, distinguishing the technology from its discontinued product offering. OpenAI has prominently used Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF) to align Large Language Models, including in training InstructGPT and the original ChatGPT, but its current systems use a broader range of AI Alignment and safety techniques rather than relying universally or exclusively on RLHF. It competes with organizations including Google DeepMind and Anthropic in advanced Machine Learning research and development.
