Smart TV spying “worst thing for electronics”Contabo
A lawsuit filed by the Texas Attorney General alleged that Samsung smart TVs capture screenshots of your display every 500 milliseconds. Meanwhile, Samsung's official privacy page insists it "does not record or watch" any content displayed on your screen. How can both statements be true? The answer is Automatic Content Recognition (ACR). Instead of saving full video recordings, smart TVs periodically sample the display or audio and compress it into a lightweight digital fingerprint (or "signature"). An external ad server then compares that signature against a massive commercial library of movies, shows, and advertisements to log what you are watching. In a landmark 2024 study by researchers at ACM IMC testing Samsung and LG TVs, researchers discovered something worse: plugging in a laptop or gaming console via HDMI didn't stop the tracking. In fact, HDMI inputs and live broadcast TV generated the highest volume of ACR traffic. Here is what happens to your screen over HDMI, why logging out of your TV account changes nothing, and the single setting that actually stops it. 🔗 Sources & Documentation: • Research Study - Watching TV with the Internet (ACM IMC 2024): https://arxiv.org/html/2409.06203v1 • Samsung Official Support - Understanding ACR Technology: https://www.samsung.com/us/support/answer/ANS10010616/ • Texas Attorney General - Samsung Smart TV Consent Agreement: https://www.texasattorneygeneral.gov/news/releases/attorney-general-paxton-secures-major-agreement-samsung-ensure-texans-are-protected-smart-tvs • Privacy Guides - Samsung Halts Non-Consensual ACR in Texas: https://www.privacyguides.org/news/2026/03/02/samsung-forced-to-halt-data-collection-in-tvs-in-texas-without-express-consent/ • FTC Vizio ACR Settlement Record: https://ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2017/02/vizio-pay-22-million-ftc-state-new-jersey-settle-charges-it-collected-viewing-histories-11-million 🔔 Subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0DZj1PNa_Fp0MU6uPSKv5w?sub_confirmation=1 💙 Become a Member: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0DZj1PNa_Fp0MU6uPSKv5w/join 🐦 Twitter/X: https://x.com/cloud_codes 💬 Discord: https://discord.gg/mhgXXmhrh #smarttv #privacy #cybersecurity #samsung #tech #infosec #hardware #cloudcodes
