The End of Tokens? What Meta's New Paper Proves
Ask an AI chatbot how many r's are in "strawberry" and it can still slip up. It isn't stupid it literally never sees individual letters. To GPT-4's tokenizer, strawberry is sliced into three chunks: "str", "aw", and "berry". It is counting letters it was never allowed to read. Now, a breakthrough research paper from the University of Washington and Meta FAIR ("Breaking the Token Ceiling") explores the alternative: training models that read raw bytes instead of pre-sliced token chunks. To make it work, researchers used Llama 3-8B as a teacher to train small 1-billion parameter byte models. Using a clever "End-Of-Token" distillation technique, the student model translates the teacher's chunk probabilities into exact letter-by-letter odds without losing information. In this breakdown, we follow the word "tiramisu" through the model, explain why byte models start out behind before pulling ahead, and separate what is actually proven from what is just extrapolated math. 🔗 Sources & Documentation: • Research Paper - Breaking the Token Ceiling: Distilling Smaller, Stronger Byte Models (arXiv 2609.12303): https://arxiv.org/html/2609.12303 • Kunal Mehta - Why AI Miscounts Letters in Strawberry: https://blog.legoktm.com/2024/08/10/how-many-rs-are-in-the-word-strawberry.html • Meta FAIR - Byte Latent Transformer Research (BLT): https://arxiv.org/html/2412.09871 • Google Research - ByT5 Token-Free Models: https://ar5iv.labs.arxiv.org/html/2105.13626 • Andrej Karpathy - minBPE Tokenizer Lecture: https://github.com/karpathy/minbpe/blob/master/lecture.md 🔔 Subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0DZj1PNa_Fp0MU6uPSKv5w?sub_confirmation=1 💙 Become a Member: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0DZj1PNa_Fp0MU6uPSKv5w/join 🐦 Twitter/X: https://x.com/cloud_codes 💬 Discord: https://discord.gg/mhgXXmhrh #ai #machinelearning #deeplearning #llm #meta #llama #datascience #cloudcodes
