Smarter AI with the Same Weights
Normally, an AI model gets more thinking time by writing out long chains of tokens that you pay for word by word. A new paper introduces LEV—a 2.6B parameter model that jumps from 63% to 76% accuracy simply by looping its own 48 layers up to four times, using the exact same weights without generating a single extra word. In this breakdown, we look at how internal layer loops work, why extra passes can sometimes break correct answers, and how an automated "stopper" decides how hard to think. Key Takeaways: • Looping Hidden States: Rerunning the same 48-layer stack up to four times without re-reading the prompt, carrying forward internal hidden states. • Usable Answers at Every Depth: A shared head evaluates candidate choices after each pass, giving an actionable answer at any stage. • The Trade-off: Pass 2 fixes roughly 1 in 5 mistakes but breaks 1 in 12, with the fourth pass adding less than 1 percentage point. • The Adaptive Stopper: An automated classifier that assigns roughly 1 pass to easy questions and 3 passes to hard ones, calculating 15% to 24% compute savings. • The Catch: Evaluated on JevBench (multiple-choice decision benchmarks, not open-ended chat), and live adaptive serving is calculated offline so far. 🔗 Sources & Documentation: • LEV Research Paper (arXiv 2610.20951): https://arxiv.org/abs/2610.20951 • Lev-2.6B Model Card on Hugging Face: https://huggingface.co/songdj/Lev-2.6B • ByteDance Ouro-2.6B Architecture Config: https://huggingface.co/ByteDance/Ouro-2.6B • OpenLAIR LEV GitHub Repository: https://github.com/OpenLAIR/lev 🔔 Subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0DZj1PNa_Fp0MU6uPSKv5w?sub_confirmation=1 💙 Become a Member: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0DZj1PNa_Fp0MU6uPSKv5w/join 🐦 Twitter/X: https://x.com/cloud_codes 💬 Discord: https://discord.gg/mhgXXmhrh #ai #machinelearning #deeplearning #llm #neuralnetworks #bytedance #cloudcodes
