LVMPD drone found missing man with dementia in time | Lifesaving Achievement Award Finalist

An 88-year-old man with dementia had been missing for more than four hours when the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department launched a third sortie, this time with the battery nearly spent. The pilot spotted him lying in a dirt lot near an open manhole. Officers reached him three minutes later. This story is a finalist for the 2026 Aerial Achievement Award in the Lifesaving Achievement category, which recognizes missions where drone technology directly saved a life or prevented serious harm. Now in its third year, the awards span five categories honoring agencies putting autonomous flight to work in the field. Winners are announced at the Aerial Achievement Awards Dinner & Celebration during Ascend on September 23.
