Richie Morrisroe: Visualisation: Modelling the World
Visualisation: Modelling the World Richie Morrisroe Visualisation is a critical component of most data-related workflows, and yet it is often under-discussed. This talk will start with some (brief) perceptual background on how the brain processes images, which makes a foundation for creating effective data visualisations. We'll then cover different approaches to plotting, the use of colour and shape and different kinds of plots. Particularly in focus are using plots for their two major purposes. Firstly, helping the user to understand their data, and secondly communicating these data insights to broader audiences. We'll cover what works for non-technical users along with some thoughts on what doesn't work. Additionally, we'll look at tradeoffs between different kinds of visualisations (maps ignore time, line charts ignore spatial relations) and then look at interactive approaches that can combine the best of both worlds.
