Smart Spreadsheet Workflows with Celbridge & Python Christopher Gregan Spreadsheets are a powerful tool for organizing and analyzing data, but they can also frustrate users: data entry errors, complex formulas and brittle manual workflows are common problems. This talk is an introduction to Celbridge, a free open-source tool that helps users address these challenges by building automated spreadsheet workflows using Python. Attendees will first learn how to install and get started with Celbridge. We will then describe how to use the built-in Python REPL, code editor and spreadsheet editor features to automate common workflows in minutes, using simple Python scripts. Topics will include: spreadsheet data import & export, data transformation and validation, and using packages like Pandas and Numpy to replace complex spreadsheet formulas. We will briefly discuss how Celbridge can also be a great tool for learning and experimenting with Python, using a simple example game built with Pygame. I will also explain why I chose Python as the engine that powers Celbridge and why I chose to make this project open source. The talk will conclude with an outline of the project roadmap followed by a short Q&A. Additional Notes: I am the author of Celbridge and I've been working on the project for the last 3 years. Project github: https://github.com/AnTulcha/Celbridge We've been using Celbridge extensively in our game studio and I'm now trying to make it more accessible to the open source community. My goal with this talk is to raise awareness of Celbridge so it can make a positive impact with more users. This would be my first Python talk, though I have done a lot of public speaking at game industry events, such as this talk I gave at Unite Boston 2015. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kP767dFQaCU The audience for this talk is people who use spreadsheets like Excel & Google Sheets regularly and would like an easy way to use Python to solve some of the pain points associated with spreadsheets. All the code demonstrated will be short and simple, without deep diving into the tech, so this talk is suitable for beginner-to-intermediate Python users. The entire talk will be delivered as a live demo using Celbridge itself to present the slides and demo use cases. I've given several presentations using this format previously and it works really well, but I will also have backup slides in case anything goes wrong. Talk room 2 (200 people) Sun 4:15 pm - 4:45 pm
