She Judges Startups on One Thing (It's Not Revenue) | Claire Zau, Lightspeed
Most people evaluate a startup on revenue and retention. Claire Zau thinks the real signal is something else entirely: can the founder hire? She's a VC at Lightspeed, and her read is that the most underrated thing in early-stage is whether a founder can get great people to walk away from good jobs, take less money, and bet on their vision. "So much of the founder's journey is lonely. Can you get people to believe it enough to jump with you?" She's also contrarian on the thing builders treat as gospel. She has one of the biggest audiences in venture and she'll tell you distribution isn't everything. "It's just another lever." And the belief under her whole approach: "Progress is not the default. It only changes because founders and builders make it." I sat down with her at Stanford (where she studied) to discuss: •The most underrated signal in early-stage startups (it's not revenue) •Why distribution is a lever, not the whole game •Why narratives win in venture and how to build one •Why progress isn't the default, and who makes it happen •What she actually looks for before she invests 𝐓𝐈𝐌𝐄𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐌𝐏𝐒 (00:00) Meet Claire at Stanford (03:03) Her Path Into Venture (28:00) Audience as a Market Signal (33:56) Progress Is Not the Default (36:51) Distribution Is a Lever, Not Everything (43:11) Why Narratives Win in Venture (01:06:20) The One Metric She Checks Before Investing (01:16:21) Who Owns the AI Narrative This is a Composio "Agents at Work" podcast, where I sit down with founders building the next leap of AI. 🎧 Subscribe for new episodes 📩 Listen on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4fxtM0FC4FxTR4l9NRgWsj?si=d05940c466154f1e 🐦 Follow Composio: @composio #VentureCapital #AI #Startups #EdTech #FutureOfWork
