Inside Life360’s Family Safety and Real-Time Geospatial Analytics | RTA Summit 2025
Life360 is a leading family safety and location‐sharing platform with millions of monthly active users. Life360 processes massive streaming location data via geospatial analytics to notify users of the last known location of their loved ones or a tagged device. This talk will highlight a revolutionary new capability of Life360: the ability to discover Tile™ Bluetooth-based trackers via the Hubble Network™, allowing you to locate your backpack or car keys from orbit. Delivering such capabilities at scale requires ingesting hundreds of thousands of location updates per second from sources like Kinesis, NSQ and Kafka, then combining that with static user metadata to apply filters (such as excluding drivers or minors). To support these complex real‐time and ad hoc geospatial queries, Life360 is migrating from a legacy analytics stack to StarTree which is capable of low‐latency updates and high‐throughput reads. In particular, StarTree Pinot provides the real‐time ingestion, efficient indexing, and query performance necessary for sub‐second geospatial lookups—even as the user base grows to over 100 million MAU. This session will detail how Life360 designed their data pipeline and architecture, including the challenges of reliably ingesting massive streaming data, storing and enriching it for analytics, and executing near‐instantaneous geospatial searches.
