OpenAI says its AI cracked two big open math problems

OpenAI says an internal model it hasn't named produced proofs of two long-open problems. The first is Sogge's local smoothing conjecture from 1991, proved in every dimension, with the Kakeya conjecture along with it. The second is a paper saying the Exponential Time Hypothesis, a famous guess in computer science, is false. Both come with Lean formalizations, proofs a computer can check, and an independent group led by Russell Impagliazzo, Ramamohan Paturi and Ryan Williams will examine the ETH proof. OpenAI calls the manuscripts "a form of raw research data," and on October 7 it withdrew three earlier ones over a sign error. Want a deep dive? Comment DEEP DIVE.
