How GIS and AI Expand Collective Intelligence
GIS and AI together can expand our collective intelligence. Jack Dangermond’s keynote explains why geography and spatial thinking are essential to that future. AI makes collective knowledge usable as a tool, while geography and spatial thinking provide the content and context that make it meaningful. The relationship runs both ways. AI is giving GIS users new ways to create and analyze data, automate processes, write code, and even learn. GIS, in turn, grounds AI in real-world context. Looking ahead, an emerging frontier is opening geographic information to AI agents, meaning software that can act on tasks and communicate with people and other agents. As technology accelerates, human work matters more. Collaboration, sharing, acting responsibly, and maintaining trust and integrity are what turn faster tools into better outcomes.
