Jack Dangermond on the Power of GIS Creating a Better Future
Jack Dangermond opens the 46th annual Esri User Conference with a tour of how GIS is being applied worldwide. During his opening address, Esri founder Jack Dangermond welcomes an audience of attendees from more than 117 countries — plus an equivalent online audience — and devotes the session to the work of the user community using the power of GIS for creating better futures. Rather than a product roadmap, this is a curated walkthrough of maps submitted by users across nearly every sector where geography drives decisions. The examples span conservation and environmental recovery, natural resources and agriculture, national land records and 3D cadastre, urban planning and low-carbon design, indoor and campus GIS, transportation, public works, water and wastewater, electric and gas utilities, telecommunications, public safety, disaster response, demographics and health, private-sector site and market analysis, community engagement, remote sensing, and cartographic design. Named work includes Sweden's countrywide parcel fabric, 3D cadastre in Istanbul, carbon-aware land use planning with Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transportation, PG&E's 3D utility planning, Swiss Rail's 5G coverage mapping, and the USGS on-demand topographic quad service.
