This CI Pipeline Failed (And Saved 250 Servers)
On October 19, 2026, the official release of OVHcloud's command-line tool shipped a secret-stealing backdoor to roughly 250 downloads. The file kept its exact name, its version tag, and its official GitHub URL. The source code was never touched. Only one detail gave the intruder away: its SHA-256 fingerprint flipped from 5c2beb56... to 3833daff.... A customer's CI pipeline had pinned the original hash, caught the mismatch, and failed the build. Ninety-four minutes later, maintainers pulled the compromised binaries. In this breakdown, we show how an attacker used a developer account compromised by a browser extension to swap live release files, why release immutability matters, and the two major supply chain blind spots where hash pinning completely fails to protect you. 🔗 Sources & Documentation: • OVHcloud Security Advisory (GHSA-862f-55f5-vmvw): https://github.com/ovh/ovhcloud-cli/security/advisories/GHSA-862f-55f5-vmvw • Customer Detection Report (Issue #300): https://github.com/ovh/ovhcloud-cli/issues/300 • GitHub Documentation - Understanding Immutable Releases: https://docs.github.com/en/code-security/supply-chain-security/understanding-your-software-supply-chain/immutable-releases • The Stack - OVHcloud CLI Compromise Coverage: https://www.thestack.technology/ovhcloud-cli-repo-compromised-customer-reports-incident/ • LiteLLM Supply Chain Incident Report: https://docs.litellm.ai/blog/security-incident-oct-21-2026 • Mozilla Bugzilla - eMudhra CA Key Generation Flaw: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2083449 🔔 Subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0DZj1PNa_Fp0MU6uPSKv5w?sub_confirmation=1 💙 Become a Member: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0DZj1PNa_Fp0MU6uPSKv5w/join 🐦 Twitter/X: https://x.com/cloud_codes 💬 Discord: https://discord.gg/mhgXXmhrh #cybersecurity #infosec #devops #github #supplychain #programming #linux #cloudcodes
