Should We Slow Down AI? Francis Fukuyama on the China Question

If the U.S. slows down frontier AI development, will China pull ahead? Francis Fukuyama, senior fellow at Stanford’s Freeman Spogli Institute, says that question comes up every time someone proposes slowing down. He argues that AI is no longer only a technology companies adopt. It has become a major political issue. He points to recent incidents of AI agents escaping their sandboxes as one reason Washington is paying closer attention. Some AI companies are now asking for more government intervention themselves. For any organization using AI, he says that means understanding the politics of AI at home and, most importantly, internationally. Fukuyama co-directs Stanford’s AI, Power, and the New Rules of Global Strategy program with Andrew Grotto, former senior director for cyber policy on the National Security Council. Over three and a half days on Stanford’s campus, it helps executives, board directors, and policymakers understand how geopolitical forces are shaping AI decisions.
