7 Free Engines That Run Local AI 2x Faster Than llama.cpp

Every week, a new inference engine promises to run local models 2x to 3x faster than llama.cpp on consumer hardware. But checking each claim against its own GitHub repository, documentation, or model card reveals a very different story. Out of seven viral performance claims, only one published an actual side-by-side benchmark table against llama.cpp. Four engines reported numbers under completely different test scopes, and two claims could not be traced to any primary source at all. What's inside: • The 7 engines audited: Checking Strata Pascal, Lithos-Metal, PolyStrata, Glyd, the V620 vLLM fork, the Claude-generated megakernel, and Lamina against their actual repositories. • The single verified table: How an experimental Strata fork hit 24.5 tok/s vs 7.8 tok/s on an old 4GB GTX 1050 Ti laptop running a 35B MoE model. • The memory bandwidth formula: Why plain token decoding cannot exceed memory bandwidth divided by file size, capping an RTX 3090 at 55 tok/s without multi-token drafting. • The two real acceleration tricks: Eliminating GPU launch bubbles with fused megakernels, and sharing single weight reads across multiple tokens with speculative drafting. • The moving baseline: How llama.cpp’s merged MTP features and rejection sampling raise the standard performance floor. • The 3-step check: How to calculate the theoretical ceiling for your card before spending a weekend installing an overfit engine. ⏱️ Chapters: 0:00 The "2x Faster Than llama.cpp" Trap 0:36 The Moving Baseline: llama.cpp's Own MTP Speedup 1:22 Engine 1: Strata Pascal Fork (GTX 1050 Ti Mobile) 2:28 Engine 2: Lithos-Metal on Apple M5 Max 3:52 Engine 3: PolyStrata & The 5090 Laptop Mix-Up 4:45 Engine 4: Glyd & Nemotron 120B on RTX 4090 5:55 Engine 5: V620 vLLM Fork (Where is the 8x?) 6:41 The Memory Bandwidth Ceiling (Bandwidth ÷ File Size) 7:49 Trick 1: Fused Megakernels & Kernel Launch Bubbles 8:42 Trick 2: Speculative Drafting & Weight Amortization 10:08 Trick 3: Hierarchical Expert Offloading (Strata MoE) 11:15 Why Offloading Dominates Prefill but Crawls on Decode 12:11 llama.cpp Fights Back: Mainline MTP & Probabilistic Sampling 14:16 Engine 6: The Claude-Generated Megakernel (140 tok/s) 15:47 Engine 7: Lamina on RTX 3050 (Untraceable Claim) 16:04 The Shared Catch: Overfitting to One Model and One GPU 16:43 Verdict: Best Setup for 24GB, Laptops, and Macs 18:22 The 3-Step Sanity Check Before You Install 🔗 Sources: • Strata Pascal Optimized Fork: https://github.com/SirDebugALot/Strata-Qwen3.6-35B-A3B-Pascal-Optimized • Lithos-Metal Repository: https://github.com/lithos-ai/lithos-metal • Lithos-Metal Backend Verification Document: https://github.com/lithos-ai/lithos-metal/blob/46b2bc4cda57826c072d94afe90a58633aaeb6d9/docs/research/m5max-27b-backend-verification.md • Glyd Nemotron-3 Hummingbird Model Card: https://huggingface.co/glyd/nemotron-3-hummingbird • PolyStrata Repository: https://github.com/VecSzn/PolyStrata • Strata Architecture by Niko1221: https://github.com/Niko1221/Strata • Archived Strata-GLM Experiment: https://github.com/sergqwer/strata-glm • Lucebox Megakernel Technical Post: https://www.lucebox.com/blog/megakernel • Speculative Decoding Foundation Paper (Leviathan et al.): https://arxiv.org/abs/2211.17192 • llama.cpp MTP Implementation PR 22673: https://github.com/ggml-org/llama.cpp/pull/22673 • llama.cpp Probabilistic MTP Sampling PR 27694: https://github.com/ggml-org/llama.cpp/pull/27694 • V620 vLLM RDNA2 Fork: https://github.com/JoseMiralles/vllm-rdna2-qwen • Community Qwen MTP Tuning Repository: https://github.com/sudoingX/qwen38-mtp 🔔 Subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0DZj1PNa_Fp0MU6uPSKv5w?sub_confirmation=1 💙 Become a Member: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0DZj1PNa_Fp0MU6uPSKv5w/join 🐦 Twitter/X: https://x.com/cloud_codes 💬 Discord: https://discord.gg/mhgXXmhrh #LocalLLM #LlamaCPP #AIHardware #RTX4090 #AppleSilicon #GPU #MachineLearning #SystemDesign #CloudCodes
